Crematories, Retort Operators & Cremation
About 9 of every 75 questions on a Arkansas state exam practice exam come from this topic.
What to know
The construction-permit notice runs on a Sunday and a Wednesday, 7–15 days before the application. A temporary certificate lasts up to 90 days. Crematories need $1,000,000 in insurance and a full-time licensed funeral director as manager. Unembalmed remains may be held 24 hours unless refrigerated. When cremation is planned, embalming or refrigeration isn't required for 48 hours unless a health problem dictates otherwise. No simultaneous cremations without written authorization from every authorizing agent. Remains must be reduced to 1/8 inch before scattering, and cremated remains unclaimed after 90 days may be disposed of. Retort operators must be 18 with a high school diploma or GED and hold CANA, ICCFA, or NFDA certification. Trainees may work up to 6 months under a certified operator.
